Understanding Dental Implants: Your Questions Answered

Dental implants are widely regarded as the gold standard for replacing missing teeth — and for good reason. They look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. But many patients arrive at their first consultation with questions about the process, the timeline, and whether implants are right for them.

Here, our team at Basil's Dental Clinic answers the most common questions we hear.

What Exactly Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over several months — a process called osseointegration. Once fused, the post acts as an artificial tooth root. A custom-made crown is then attached on top, giving you a permanent, natural-looking tooth.

The result is a restoration that:

  • Looks and feels identical to a natural tooth
  • Does not shift or slip like a denture
  • Preserves jawbone structure
  • Can last a lifetime with proper care

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Most healthy adults who have lost one or more teeth are good candidates for implants. The key requirements are:

  • Sufficient jawbone density — enough bone to anchor the implant. If bone has been lost, a bone graft may be performed first.
  • Healthy gums — active gum disease must be treated before implant placement.
  • Good general health — some conditions (such as uncontrolled diabetes) require management before surgery.
  • Non-smoker or committed to quitting — smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure.

What Does the Process Involve?

The implant journey typically unfolds in three phases:

  1. Consultation and planning — X-rays, 3D scans, and a full oral health assessment determine whether implants are suitable and plan the exact placement.
  2. Implant placement — The titanium post is placed under local anaesthesia. Healing takes 3–6 months as the implant fuses with the bone.
  3. Crown placement — Once healed, a custom crown is attached. You leave with a fully restored, permanent tooth.

Does It Hurt?

Implant placement is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should feel no pain during the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild — most patients manage with over-the-counter pain relief and return to normal activities within a day or two.

How Long Do Implants Last?

With proper care — brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups — dental implants can last a lifetime. The crown may need replacement after 10–15 years due to normal wear.
