Building a Winning Dental Routine at Home

Professional dental care is essential — but what happens between appointments matters just as much. Great oral health is built on consistent daily habits at home. The good news is that a winning dental routine doesn't need to be complicated.

The Cornerstone: Brushing Correctly

Most people brush, but fewer brush correctly. Here is what makes the difference:

  • Frequency — Brush at least twice a day: after breakfast and before bed.
  • Duration — Two full minutes each time. Use a timer if needed.
  • Technique — Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline and use gentle circular motions. Avoid scrubbing side-to-side, which can damage enamel and irritate gums.
  • Toothbrush choice — Use a soft-bristled brush. Replace it every three months, or sooner if bristles are frayed.
  • Fluoride toothpaste — Always choose a toothpaste containing fluoride, which strengthens enamel and prevents decay.

Don't Skip Flossing

Flossing reaches the 40% of tooth surfaces that your brush cannot. It removes plaque and food particles from between teeth — a common site for cavities and gum disease.

Floss at least once per day, ideally before bedtime. If traditional floss is difficult to use, interdental brushes or a water flosser are excellent alternatives.

Add a Mouthwash

A fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash used after brushing adds an extra layer of protection. It reaches areas the brush and floss may miss, reduces harmful bacteria, and freshens breath. Use it as a final step in your routine — not as a replacement for brushing or flossing.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Diet plays a significant role in oral health:

  • Limit sugar — Sugar feeds the bacteria that produce acid, which erodes enamel. Reduce sweets, fizzy drinks, and fruit juices.
  • Stay hydrated with water — Water rinses away food particles and keeps saliva production healthy. Saliva is your mouth's natural defence.
  • Eat calcium-rich foods — Dairy, leafy greens, and nuts support strong teeth and bones.
  • Avoid snacking frequently — Every time you eat, acid attacks your teeth for about 20 minutes. Fewer eating occasions mean fewer acid attacks.

Don't Forget Your Tongue

The tongue harbours bacteria that contribute to bad breath and can affect overall oral health. Gently brush your tongue each time you brush your teeth, or use a dedicated tongue scraper.
